Portola Art Gallery Presents Alan McGee’s “Tafoni - Accentuating the Negative”
Location: Portola Art Gallery at Allied Arts Guild
Event Dates: 7/16/2010 -
7/31/2010
Reception: •
MENLO PARK, Calif. -- June 17, 2010 -- The Portola Art Gallery presents “Tafoni - Accentuating the Negative,” a collection of images by photographer Alan McGee of Portola Valley.
Tafoni is the name given by geologists to the unusual and often beautiful honeycomb formations and shallow caverns created by natural weathering processes in the sandstone outcroppings that occur in the mountains of the San Francisco Bay. This is a phenomenon that occurs only in a few places in the world.
Tafoni afford the intrepid photographer some interesting challenges physically, technically and aesthetically. Physically, because Tafoni occur on precipitous slopes; technically, because of the mostly dark spaces which may require exposures of several minutes; and aesthetically, because the formations while visually interesting often don’t seem to work well in the conventional black and white print.
Alan has photographed these natural forms and presents them as negative images which reverse the tonal values of the conventional print: white and black trade places, and only middle grey remains unchanged. The negative print has its own peculiar form of beauty.
“These negative images of Tafoni, where deep shadows become sources of symbolic light and all sense of spatial orientation is lost, challenge our conventional conceptions of reality,” explains Alan. “These cavernous landscapes become evocative “mindscapes” -- fantasy worlds that invite subjective interpretation. Spaces where tonal values are reversed can become an alternate reality to the viewer.”

"Westward Ho" Deserts and Canyons of the American West by Julia Munger Seelos
Location: Portola Art Gallery at Allied Arts Guild
Event Dates: 4/1/2010 -
4/30/2010
Reception: 4/3/2010 • 1-4pm
The Portola Art Gallery presents "Westward Ho" Deserts and Canyons of the American West by Julia Munger Seelos of Redwood City. Inspired by the dramatic backdrops of the classic movie westerns, Julia dreamed of seeing the American West first hand. In her oil paintings, created on location in the canyons of Arizona, the mountains of Colorado and the deserts of California, she has followed in the footsteps of the great artists that helped open the West such as Albert Bierstadt, Gilbert Munger and Maynard Dixon.

Seelos' painting, Canyon Majesty (Oil on Canvas Panel, 11” x 15”) captures the grandeur of Canyon de Chelly seen from the same vantage point as the iconic photograph by Edward S. Curtis. The rich reds and violets of the canyons are expressed with vigorous brush strokes done in an impressionistic style typical of Julia's plein air works. Many of the paintings have been on exhibit at the Southwest Gallery in Dallas in the Plein Air Southwest juried show.
"Redwall" (Oil on Canvas Panel, 11” x 15”) is from the series of paintings Julia completed while on a raft trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Freezing cold water and class five rapids only added to the excitement as the hardy artists shared the wonder of the canyon. The exhibit will include Seelos' paintings from Monument Valley, AZ, Rocky Mountain National Park, CO and Borrego Springs, CA.
The reception will have Navajo flute music from the canyon as a background.

Portola Art Gallery presents “Visions of California,” a welcoming exhibit of oil paintings by Jim Promessi, longtime Bay Area artist and Skyline College art professor. Selected paintings will show Promessi’s fascination with California’s beautiful and unique landscape, from the mountains to the coast.
“As a California native, I recall precious images from my childhood - clear sunny days with bright blue skies, green grasses, wildflowers and new green on the trees,” said Promessi. “Each spring, I am fortunate to revisit those images along the coast and inland areas, and as an artist I seek to record California’s magnificence.”
Promessi began exhibiting and competing while still a student at San Jose State University, with his first national juried exhibition at the 9th National Exhibition of Prints and Drawings in Oklahoma City, OK. His juried exhibitions in California museums include: The Phelen Awards at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, San Francisco; the Triton Museum in Santa Clara; the Pioneer Museum and Haggin Art Gallery in Stockton; and the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento.
Promessi paints in the traditional manner, and currently focuses on California landscapes, figurative and still life work. His favored mediums are oil on canvas and soft pastel on paper. His award-winning work has been featured in various publications, including Pastel Highlights and American Artists Publication, Collectors Edition. American Artist Magazine awarded him the Grand Prize in their National Competition commemorating their 60th year in print. Promessi is a member of Oil Painters of America and the California Art Club.

Portola Art Gallery presents “The Gentle Landscape“ pastel and oil paintings by Mary K. Stahl of Palo Alto. The new body of work evokes a sense of serenity within the landscape, a soft focus and calm atmosphere.
Exhibit Dates: February 1-27, 2010. Reception: Saturday, Feb. 6, from 1-4pm.
The painting “Hope Valley” by Mary was inspired by the glimmering light play off the edges of the age old pine and fir trees that populate the beautiful Hope Valley in the Sierras. Another painting featured in the exhibit is, “Rubicon Point,” a pastel painting that was painted on site in Lake Tahoe CA. With the deep turquoise blue of the lake water lapping up against the rugged rocks, Mary felt the power of the pine trees as they appeared to grow right out of the granite.
Mary says, “I love the process of creating art. Even at those rare times I feel “blocked” I know the feeling will pass and I will get back to creating art again. To have the ability to convey the grandeur and beauty of nature on canvas gives me an amazing and joyful feeling. My hope is that the viewer can share some of that joy with me.”

Portola Art Gallery presents “Expressions in Water Media” an exhibit of new water media paintings by Barbara von Haunalter of Los Altos Hills.
Exhibit dates: November 2- 30, 2009. Reception: Saturday, Nov. 14, 1-4 pm.
Master of all painting mediums, Barbara von Haunalter of Los Altos Hills proves this month that water based paints sing. The new work created on site in Pescadero, Hidden Villa Ranch in Los Altos Hills and other Bay Area locations vibrates with color and depth via Barbara’s adept handling of her brush.
Barbara uses transparent watercolor, watercolor with pastel, water-based oil and transparent watercolor, watercolor and gouache: on watercolor papers of various kinds, multimedia boards, MonaLisa panels, on canvas, and 300 lb. watercolor paper. The chaotic selection of mediums is well organized in the resulting paintings.
Barbara says about the painting, Cornstalks, “. I’ve always loved the way corn stalks looked when their time was up--the blond colors and patterns are intriguing. I painted these shapes in my garden, focusing on the abstract qualities I observed. I wanted to bring out the drama that I saw in the stalks against the background.”

Portola Art Gallery presents “A Colorful Journey,” an exhibit of new acrylic paintings by Doriane Heyman of Hillsborough.
Exhibit dates: October 1-31, 2009. Reception: Saturday, Oct. 3, 1-4 pm.
Since in art, as in life, one does not escape one’s background, an artist’s experiences get reflected in the artwork. Having grown up in the Netherlands and having lived and traveled extensively in many European countries, Heyman still finds Europe a source of inspiration for many of her paintings. Often she finds an unusual angle, a different way of looking at the world.
Besides landscapes of different countries and compositions with people in various settings, water scenes are a favorite subject matter of hers. “I am attracted by the mystery of water, sometimes revealing a lot, sometimes opaque, not giving anything away, and always evoking a myriad of different moods.”
In most paintings she explores the effect of light on the forms and the moods it creates. The hallmarks of her paintings are good design, strong darks and lights and vivid colors.
Known mostly for her watercolors, in the Portola Art Gallery she will show her latest acrylics during the month of October.
